Biochemical Blood Testing

source: Ronald G. Haller, MD

Blood tests commonly run are creatine kinase (CK), ammonia (NH3), lactate, glucose, potassium and total hemoglobin (THb).

Creatine kinase - used to identify muscle breakdown.

Ammonia - aids in the diagnosis of defects in muscle glycogenolysis.

Lactate - aids in the diagnosis of defects in muscle glycogenolysis.

Pyruvate - useful for diagnosing metabolic blocks in skeletal muscle metabolism due to enzyme deficiencies in the glycolytic or respiratory pathways.
