Exercise in Burn Survivors

This study is being done to find out whether exercise capacity can be improved with exercise training in burn survivors.. We are also recruiting non-burned control subjects to participate.

Qualifications:
  • Have a burn injury covering 20% or more of your body with at least half of that burned area grafted
  • Have well healed burn injuries
  • Are at least 18 month post burn injury
  • Were initially hospitalized at least 15 days due to your burn injury
  • Are between the ages of 18 and 60
  • Are healthy, although individuals with controlled hypertension or controlled elevated cholesterol will be permitted to participate
  • Have no physical impediments that would prevent you from exercising
  • Not be pregnant or breast-feeding
Study Procedures Include:
  • Two four-day visits (pre and post exercise) to Dallas to evaluate your overall capacity to exercise
  • Monitoring heart rhythm and blood pressure
  • Measurement of skin blood flow and sweat rate
  • Pulmonary function test
  • Muscle strength and functional capacity testing
  • 6 month exercise training program in your hometown
